“If they hear you, they hunt you.”
Welcome to a new Earth, inhabited by extraterrestrial predators that are blind but have a razor-sharp hearing. They attack anything that makes noise. Consequently, most of the human and animal population has been annihilated. To survive, you must be deathly quiet.
A Quiet Place directed by John Krasinski is a post-apocalyptic science fiction horror film starring himself, along with Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe.
The film starts with a tear-jerker scene that sets the tone for the rest of the movie. A family of five (wife, husband, a daughter, and two sons) is rummaging for supplies in a desolate town. They mostly communicate via American Sign Language (ASL) and walk barefoot. The youngest son sneaks in a toy plane in his bag. While crossing a bridge through a forest, he activates the plane, making noise thereby alerting a nearby creature. Can his family save him in time? How long will they survive like this?
All throughout the film, the battle for survival rages on quietly. You got to watch the film to find out how. I am a huge sucker for horror films, and A Quiet Place doesn’t disappoint. Since it includes science fiction as well, it’s also entertaining.
It is gripping from the start till finish. You remain at the edge of your seat trying to discover if the family survives till the end. It’s also hugely atmospheric.
With a running time of 90 minutes, A Quiet Place is short and taut with suspense. We get only glimpses of the monsters until the second half, thereby maintaining an enigma around them. They sure are lethal with their sharp fangs and armored akin but looks-wise they disappointed me. They were similar to the monsters in Stranger Things; hence, this film loses out on the novelty factor.
Nevertheless, top-notch acting from the entire cast, especially from John Krasinski (best known for his role in The Office), more than compensates for the above niggle. The tender moments that Krasinski and Blunt share, make you pray harder for their safety.
I also liked that the film was not solely restricted to horror and sci-fi. It also explores another theme- parenthood. I liked how Krasinski interacted with his children, protecting them from all harm but at the same time, equipping them with the tools to take care of themselves. Krasinski and Blunt’s interaction with their children constitutes some poignant moments in this film which is a novelty in a horror film. Millicent Simmonds as the congenitally deaf daughter and Noah Jupe as the son were good too.
Further, A Quiet Place is technically sleek. All in all, 90 minutes of my time were well-spent.
Verdict: Highly recommended.
Watch A Quiet Place on Amazon Prime.

The minute I saw the title of your post on my reader I thought ‘what is this a book adaptation and how did I miss it?’. Then I realized I hadn’t missed, I have a thing for reading the book before the visual version. I loved the movie and your review was spot on, though consider adding ‘movie review’ to your future post titles.

Great review! I’m slightly scared to watch it because I have such a low tolerance for horror… but I might have to power through anyway because the reviews are so good!!

Yup saw it last year. The parenting part definitely touched a chord with me. It’s a sweet film albeit in a horror surrounding😁 also it was so quiet that sometimes I felt a bit sleepy 😬 but enjoyed it 😃
