HERE’S THE EXCERPT

Laidy stepped into her small bedroom and took in its qualities. The whole house needed painting, that much was evident. She perched at the end of her bed, the mattress groaning its disapproval. The ceramic tiled floor was still tidy after yesterday’s sweeping. There was a small table she had converted into a desk, its surface piled with orderly stacks of books. Plastic drawers in the corner held folded clothing under a small bar on the wall from which she hung several garments. A dress she once wore to a wedding; a few blouses, shiny from years of starch and ironing; jeans that Yulie had given her as cast-offs. Taking in her meager wardrobe, she recalled the exchange that had prompted her sister’s charity.

“Look, girl,” Yulie had started in, “you will never get a man if you keep dressing in clothes from the supermarket!”

Laidy hadn’t taken offense from the remark. She had always worn comfortable, practical things. It wasn’t that Laidy wasn’t pretty or didn’t develop crushes on boys.

She was simply more interested in the mysteries of the world, of life itself, revealed to her when she read or studied her school assignments. Even though she felt repulsed by dissections carried out in biology class, viewing cells under the microscope thrilled her. And while she found mathematics intimidating, she enjoyed history and philosophy. These concepts represented a different world, a different life. Something new. Something greater than herself, greater than Fusa.

Stacy Christopher Zaghloul

I am a proud graduate of Texas A&M University (whoop!) and SMU’s Dedman School of Law. I am a happily inactive member of the District of Columbia’s bar association. A native Houstonian, I have also lived in Dallas, Beijing, and Bogota.

I taught special education students and English language learners in Texas, and spent some years in the administration of special education services. I also had the privilege to advocate for students with disabilities in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. I recently published my first novel, Lady Colombia, for Amazon. I am currently writing my third book, loosely based on the life of my Palestinian Venezuelan mother-in-law.

When I am not writing, I am reading, gardening, listening to music, painting, and attempting to cook. I have been blessed with two lovely daughters, the eldest of whom is attending university in Florida, the younger completing secondary school in Texas. I live in Oklahoma with my husband Jose and my dog Jet.
