Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas – Review

The Ravenels #2

A ruthless tycoon.

Savage ambition has brought common-born Rhys Winterborne vast wealth and success. In business and beyond, Rhys gets exactly what he wants. And from the moment he meets the shy, aristocratic Lady Helen Ravenel, he is determined to possess her. If he must take her virtue to ensure she marries him, so much the better . . .

A sheltered beauty.

Helen has had little contact with the glittering, cynical world of London society. Yet Rhys’s determined seduction awakens an intense mutual passion. Helen’s gentle upbringing belies a stubborn conviction that only she can tame her unruly husband. As Rhys’s enemies conspire against them, Helen must trust him with her darkest secret. The risks are unthinkable . . . the reward, a lifetime of incomparable bliss.

And it all begins with . . . marrying Mr. Winterborne.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I loved Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas. I liked it better than Cold-Hearted Rake, the first book in the series.

It was great to see how a ruthless and handsome tycoon is brought to his heels by a gentle, beautiful, and kind woman.

Rhys is a self-made man, and I got ample glimpses of how he made his empire and came a long way from being a grocer’s son. But money can only give you so much happiness.

Rhys is restless which he mistakes for hunger for more work. But in reality, he needs a soulmate.

Helen, on the other hand, has always been the quiet person in a family full of irascible people. She always thinks of others before herself. So, it was surprising to see her boldly choosing love over propriety.

Kleypas injects drama to create will-the-lovebirds-be-united suspense. I will admit I felt the stakes to be real. Not one, but two huge obstacles stood in the way of Helen and Rhys being united in holy matrimony.

Does love win it all?

Well, it has got a happy ending, but that should not deter any romance fiction fan out there to pick up this book. I had a blast of a time reading it, and I believe you would too.

Moreover, Kleypas is brilliant at creating believable, flawed characters. Consequently, I was rooting for both Helen and Rhys. Kudos to the extended family as well. Without them, the story would be incomplete.

Highly recommended for fans of romance. Period.
