A mystery worthy of the great Sherlock Holmes.

Today, I have an excerpt for you all from the book Stonechild by Kevin Albin.

WHAT’S THE BOOK ABOUT

Where do we go to when we die? Imagine human consciousness embedded in the molecules of a statue. So, when the statues of London come to life, it is a spectacle like non other, and they come with a specific message, and an offer we cannot refuse.

As the world reels in this wonder of science and religion, Molly Hargreaves has other plans and she sets out to prove that things are not as they seem.

Chased, captured and confined, Molly confronts the statues and her own fears. But who can she convince? The people are welcoming, the Government has succumbed, and the police try to act, but how do you shoot stone and metal? Be prepared to be run ragged around London on a mystery worthy of the great Sherlock Holmes.

HERE’S THE EXCERPT:

The statue of Sir Winston Churchill is discussing conservation and what needs to be done with the Prime Minister.

“Let’s talk conservation,” Churchill said to the Prime Minister and anyone else who cared to listen. “There’s no easy fix. It’s going to take determination and effort. I know the Americans haven’t exactly been playing ball, and I may be able to help out there, but you, Prime Minister, must lead the way.”

“What exactly do I need to do?” said the PM.

Churchill pondered for a moment. “If I said, take all vehicles off the road, tomorrow, accepting that you would need to make exception with essential and emergency transportation, would you do it?”

The Prime Minister pulled at his right earlobe. “If you are telling me that’s what it’s going to take. I’d do it.”

“Then that’s the plan,” said Churchill, slapping a hand down onto the table. “Make the order this afternoon.”

The Prime Minister looked horrified. How could he possibly order, let alone enforce, no vehicular traffic on British roads? How would people get to work? How would things be delivered? How would his wife get the kids to school?

“I can see you don’t like that idea,” said Churchill. “How about grounding all aircraft then, they must be warming up the atmosphere with the amount of carbon they are pumping out?”

The Prime Minister considered that for a moment: the airlines, their employees, businessmen, holidaymakers, supermarket food. The list would be endless. They’d have him ousted from government within the week.

Churchill looked serious, as he puffed at his cigar. “It’s going to need something like that. The world needs a rethink on how you go about your daily lives, and you need to act together. Whether it’s transport, industry or power, you need to get on with it. Think of it this way. If you were at war, what lengths would you go to in order to win? Financially, economically, what would you ask of the people during this war and what would they be prepared to give? As we did, not so very long ago. I suggest you would do whatever it takes. That is what you need to do now, Prime Minister.”

The Prime Minister curled back into his chair with deep concern. He knew his Cabinet were watching him. All this had fallen on his shoulders, a huge responsibility. He took a long gulp from his cognac glass.

AUTHOR BIO

I served 25 years with the police in the UK, eight years of which were with a tactical firearms team. In 2002, I took a career change, and retrained as an International Mountain Leader working across the globe guiding on mountaineering trips and expeditions.

I have led many trips to the jungles of Borneo, my favourite destination, an enchanting place that has sadly seen much deforestation. My trips were based on education and conservation.

In 2011, I won the Bronze in the Wanderlust Magazine World Guide Awards for my work.

It was whilst working on a corporate training day in London, when I pictured a statue coming to life to give my clients the answer to the clue they were working on. The rest grew from there.

My hope is that my writing will continue to spread the word on conservation and protection of all species. I live in France.
