Cold-hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas – Review

Ravenels #1

A twist of fate.

Devon Ravenel, London’s most wickedly charming rake, has just inherited an earldom. But his powerful new rank in society comes with unwanted responsibilities . . . and more than a few surprises. His estate is saddled with debt, and the late earl’s three innocent sisters are still occupying the house—along with Kathleen, Lady Trenear, a beautiful young widow whose sharp wit and determination are a match for Devon’s own.

A clash of wills.

Kathleen knows better than to trust a ruthless scoundrel like Devon. But the fiery attraction between them is impossible to deny—and from the first moment Devon holds her in his arms, he vows to do whatever it takes to possess her. As Kathleen finds herself yielding to his skillfully erotic seduction, only one question remains: can she keep from surrendering her heart to the most dangerous man she’s ever known?

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I loved it. I loved the Cold-hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas.

Right from the start, it was a battle of wills between Devon and Kathleen. Both are strong-headed characters, yet they fit together perfectly.

I loved the way Devon crumbles Kathleen’s sense of propriety through his skillful seduction and ton of love. Similarly, Kathleen goes toe to toe with Devon in almost all the matters which shakes him off his stupor of irresponsibility and decadence.

Not to mention the humor. The author cleverly injects humor to lessen the tension between the main characters.

The supporting cast is also well-developed. Along with Devon, the metamorphosis of his brother West from an irresponsible drunkard into a responsible man is admirable.

Cold-hearted Rake also introduces us to Rhys Winterborne, a ruthless tycoon, and Helen, the gentle-mannered Ravenel sister, to whom the second book in the series is devoted to. I must admit by the last eighty pages or so, I was more excited to see Helen and Rhys than Devon and Kathleen. That is why I rated this book 4 out of 5.

Make no mistake, this is a splendid romance. I completed it in 2 days straight. The starting and the middle of the book are excellent. The chemistry between Devon and Kathleen could start fireworks. But it was like I already knew they were going to be together, so I also knew a minor tiff between them would not derail their relationship.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. Recommended for historical romance lovers.
